Obesity
A lot of people struggle with excess weight these days. But unfortunately veterinarians see an increasing number of overweight pets as well. And this really is a problem; not only can excess weight cause health problems, but the well-being of your pet is compromised as well. What do you think your pet would prefer? That it can run and play freely and happily or that it is trudging, panting and moaning because it can’t keep up because of its weight?
One of the most important complications of excess weight is joint problems. Arthrosis (wear and tear of joints) appears sooner and is more serious in obese animals. The affected joints must bear every extra kilogram of body weight. That is why veterinarians always advise pet owners to keep their pets nice and lean. And if your overweight pet is suffering from joint problems, try to let it lose the extra weight. The effect on the joint problems is generally quite positive!
How does one lose weight? We all know the drill: eat less and exercise more. This doesn’t just apply to humans, but to pets as well. Stop giving your pet treats. No more cheese, sausage, bacon, cookies, chocolate (chocolate can be toxic for dogs!) or dog treats! Reduce the amount of food to less than the advised daily amount. If necessary, the amount of dog food can be reduced to 50% and the rest can be replaced by French beans from a can. This way, your dog gets fewer less calories, but can still eat a proper meal.
Go for nice long walks with your dog, and play with your cat. Gradually increase the amount of exercise, taking into account the possible limitations of your pet. You can’t run the marathon without training, so your pet has to get used to walking longer distances as well! For dogs with arthrosis it is better to exercise 5 times a day for 20-30 minutes, than once a day for 2.5 hours.
